Career Highlights:
I spent 29 years teaching secondary English, social studies and journalism in California, Oregon and the United Kingdom. I also spent a year as a curriculum director in the Medford School District in southern Oregon. I earned National Board Certified Teacher status (Adolescent and Young Adult/English Language Arts) in 2002.

In what ways do you connect with online students?
I use Canvas as well as email.
What do you want your students to take away from class?
I'd like my students to realize that being an accomplished classroom teacher is a career-long work in progress. We must all be lifelong learners and open to new research and instructional practices.
What advice would you give to your online students?
Remember the words of Abigail Adams: "Learning is not attained by chance; it must be sought for with ardor and attended to with diligence."
What qualities make someone particularly successful as an educator?
Accomplished classroom teachers are consummate masters of their academic disciplines, but that's just the beginning. They must also be masters of pedagogy. Finally, they must care passionately about their students' learning and do whatever it takes to help them succeed.
Why did you start teaching?
I wanted to provide my secondary students with a quality instructional program. I want to do this for my undergraduate and graduate students as well.
What is the one book you think everyone should read?
James Joyce's Ulysses
What do you do when you need a laugh?
I listen to Don Ameche and Frances Langford's The Bickersons on vinyl.
Tell us something interesting about yourself that your students may not know.
I've been married to my wife, JoNel, for 37 years. We have two children and three grandchildren. I'm also an avid kayaker.
