In what ways do you connect with online students?

I use any form of connection that a student prefers. This is usually email or phone, but I have been known to have a virtual cup of coffee or send a postcard. I work to stay connected because connection matters in leadership and in learning.

What do you want your students to take away from class?

I want students to really consider the intersection of theory and practice. Knowing about leadership is wonderful and interesting; however, the critical work is considering how what is being learned can be used and applied in day-to-day life. One of the things I love to hear is how students successfully integrated an idea or concept into their leadership practice and the difference it makes.

What is the value of an advanced degree in today’s work environment?

Having a deep knowledge of something is key to making a difference in your field. Knowing at a deep level allows for making connections that lead to unique insights. These insights are what will help take your work to the next level. So much of the world today is changing; therefore, deep knowledge allows for outside-the-box thinking that is necessary for successfully navigating this change.

What advice would you give to your online students?

Early and often. It is easy for online work to be out of sight and out of mind. The way to be successful is to start doing the reading and the work as soon as it is available and to commit to doing something that helps you make progress every day. Doing something, even a small thing, every day makes it so that you stay on top of things and don't lose track of the goal.

Why did you start teaching?

I want to make the world a better place. By investing in the education of today's leaders, I believe that I am helping to create the future that all of us want to see. If I use my gifts well, I can help others become better leaders and, as a result, help create better organizations and communities.

What is the one book you think everyone should read?

“Let Your Life Speak” by Parker Palmer

What do you do when you need a laugh?

I love watching Weekend Update on “Saturday Night Live.” Current or classic clips, it doesn't matter.

Tell us something interesting about yourself that your students may not know.

I have known how to make balloon animals since it was part of my job in high school.
