  • In what ways do you connect with online students?

I use Canvas, email, phone calls, text messages, Zoom, FaceTime or any other medium that works for the student.

  • What do you want your students to take away from class?

Communication is fundamental to leadership, and leaders who communicate mindfully are better prepared to serve.

  • What is the value of an advanced degree in today’s work environment?

An advanced degree provides nuance and insight into increasingly specific and applied fields, preparing a professional for greater discernment.

  • What advice would you give to your online students?

Communicate your needs early and often. By reaching out to your professors and peers, you provide opportunities to develop relationships that transcend the boundaries of a syllabus. Those relationships are more valuable in the long run than any other outcome.

  • Why did you start teaching?

I love to help in the development of others and see the transformational process as it happens. I teach communication because I find that it is the filter through which all of our life experiences flow, and greater communication skills lead to more fulfilling and enriching experiences.

  • What is the one book you think everyone should read?

“The Art of Is” by Stephen Nachmanovich

  • What do you do when you need a laugh?

I watch YouTube videos with my kids, often "instant regret" or meme videos.

  • Tell us something interesting about yourself that your students may not know.

I was a nontraditional college student (married with children) who started school after a decade-long career in metallurgical engineering, where I earned three patents in material science.
