Online Master’s Program Allows Teacher to Pursue Her Passion

Delaware public school teacher Jessica Bell has always loved history. When earning her undergraduate degree, she minored in history, and after completing a master’s and certificate in secondary education, she began teaching the subject at the high school level. But her desire to learn more never waned, so in 2023 she made the decision to pursue her master’s in history. As a busy professional/teacher/educator and mother of four, however, Jessica knew the program she chose would have to meet very specific criteria.

“What I really wanted to do was update myself, to increase my knowledge about modern fields of historical study, learn about different theories of teaching history,” she said. “Then, from a personal perspective, I needed something flexible because I’m also a parent. So, I absolutely wanted something that was online.”

After researching countless options, Jessica chose the online Master of Arts – History program from EWU.

“It seemed like such a great program. I really liked the course offerings and the accelerated format where the classes were six weeks long,” she added.

After completing her online master’s in history program, Jessica was happy to discover it exceeded her expectations.

“It’s a well-organized, well-designed program with a supportive staff,” she said. “All my assignments had very clear deadlines, whether it was a discussion board or a paper. And they were never, in my experience, difficult deadlines to meet.”

“The professors really understand history,” she added. “No matter what the topic or timeframe, every professor takes great care to show history as being this series of very interwoven, interconnected events that have both cause and consequence. I really enjoyed everything about the program, from the content to the structure.”

Knowing teacher pay scales are associated with continued education, Jessica welcomed the opportunity to marry her passion for history with a potential salary bump. When asked about her overall takeaways on the program, she concluded, “It’s been so rewarding in terms of the increased knowledge and confidence I have when I go into my classroom and talk about these subjects. I loved the program and have recommended it to many of my colleagues. It is also very affordable. I have no doubt I will get a great return on my investment.”
