Artificial intelligence is now often a part of the hiring process, including one of its most uncomfortable moments: salary negotiation. As the job market grows more competitive and transparent through platforms like LinkedIn and Glassdoor, professionals are looking for tools that help them clarify salary expectations, evaluate compensation packages and prepare for conversations with recruiters and hiring managers.
A questionnaire conducted on behalf of Eastern Washington University (EWU) surveyed 899 professionals, including 488 hiring managers and 411 workers who had used AI for salary negotiation preparation. EWU commissioned the research to better understand how AI tools are influencing negotiation skills, confidence and outcomes for job seekers in the U.S.
Key Takeaways
- 78% of professionals feel more confident in salary negotiations when they use AI to prepare.
- 63% of professionals said AI use helped them secure a stronger offer overall, and 55% secured higher base pay.
- Nearly one in five professionals (17%) secured more PTO or work flexibility by using AI in salary negotiations.
- 85% of professionals plan to use ChatGPT for salary negotiation preparation in the future.
- 50% of hiring managers believe AI gives candidates a communication advantage.
AI Boosts Confidence in Salary Negotiation Conversations
Preparing for a salary negotiation often requires research, reflection, and practice. Many professionals reported turning to AI tools to simulate conversations, organize their salary requirements and refine how they present their desired salary to a hiring manager.

A majority of professionals (78%) felt more confident negotiating salary when they used AI tools. Nearly half (48%) used AI to role-play a compensation or salary negotiation conversation, helping them practice responding to things like a salary offer or counteroffer before speaking with recruiters.
Preparation can support clearer communication about factors like base salary and benefits package details, including stock options or tuition reimbursement. ChatGPT was the most widely used tool, with 85% reporting that they had used it for salary negotiations or compensation discussions. Other platforms used in this manner included:
- Gemini: 32%
- Microsoft Copilot: 18%
- Claude: 9%
- Perplexity: 9%
Across generations, Gen X professionals reported the highest confidence boost at 81%, compared with 79% for millennials and 70% for Gen Z. This suggests that AI tools may be particularly valuable for experienced workers navigating a new role or career shift.
AI Supports Stronger Job Offers and Higher Salary Outcomes
Beyond confidence, many professionals connected their AI use to measurable improvements in their job offer outcomes. From evaluating a salary range to benchmarking similar roles, AI tools helped users approach the negotiation process with clearer data and structure.

Overall, 63% of professionals said AI helped them secure a stronger job offer. Gen Z saw the biggest impact, with 66% reporting a better offer, followed by millennials at 64% and Gen X at 57%.
More than half of respondents (55%) said using AI helped them land a higher base salary. In addition, 79% of Gen Z said AI helped them identify benchmarks for similar roles, with 73% of Gen X and 71% of millennials agreeing.
AI preparation also influenced specific elements of professionals’ compensation packages. Seventeen percent of Gen Z secured a signing bonus they attributed to AI support, as did 9% of millennials and 6% of Gen X. Nearly 1 in 5 professionals overall (17%) secured more paid time off or work flexibility, improving their total compensation beyond starting salary alone.
Looking ahead, 85% said they plan to use ChatGPT again when negotiating salary for a new job. These findings signal that AI is likely to become a routine part of salary negotiation strategy.
Hiring Managers Weigh the Impact of AI-Prepared Candidates
As job seekers integrate AI into their negotiation skills, hiring managers are forming opinions about its role in job interviews and compensation discussions. Their perceptions can influence how AI-assisted communication affects the overall hiring process.

Overall, 58% of hiring managers suspected that job candidates had used AI tools to prepare for salary negotiation conversations. Half of them believed AI gives candidates a communication advantage. However, their impressions of people perceived to use AI were mixed. Some felt candidates seemed overly rehearsed (44%) or less genuine (39%).
However, AI preparation also left a positive impression. Thirty-five percent said candidates appeared well prepared, and 26% believed they seemed more confident. Only 15% said AI use did not affect their impression. While AI can strengthen negotiation strategy, professionals should remain authentic and prepared to discuss their skill set and value to the organization in a natural way.
Salary Negotiation Tips
While AI can help professionals organize their thoughts and research compensation data, strong outcomes still depend on thoughtful planning and clear communication. Professionals who combine technology with negotiation skills are better positioned to navigate the hiring process. Key ways to prepare for applying for a job and negotiating salary include:
- Reviewing the job description to align your skill set with the job title and responsibilities
- Researching the job market to understand competitive starting salary trends
- Comparing salary range data for similar roles to clarify salary expectations and desired salary
- Practicing how to discuss base salary, total compensation and benefits package details, such as sign-on bonus, tuition reimbursement or flexible start date
- Preparing responses to a lower-than-expected salary offer or questions about salary history and salary requirements
AI tool use can strengthen your negotiation strategy by helping you structure talking points and simulate conversations. However, successful salary negotiation still relies on authenticity, preparation and the ability to clearly communicate your value to a potential employer.
