6 Online M.Ed. Options

Working professionals who want to advance their careers by earning a Master of Education degree face the challenge of trying to fit the demands of graduate education into their already busy lives. Eastern Washington University (EWU) now makes it affordable, accessible and flexible by offering six different| Master of Education degree programs online.

With EWU online programs, students can choose the path that best fits their personal and professional goals. There are seven start dates each year. All coursework is available online so students have access 24/7, allowing them to work on it when it is convenient.

Each online program consists of 12 courses (49 credit hours) that include 25 hours of common core courses (including an internship) and 24 hours of specialization courses. All courses are six weeks long and are taught by the same experienced faculty who teach on campus.

1. Master of Education in Early Childhood Education Online Program

The M.Ed. in Early Childhood Education covers a range of topics, including the science of early childhood development, positive learning environments for children, leadership and policy, and family systems and engagement.

Aligned with standards put forth by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the curriculum reflects current evidence-based practices for working with children from birth through age 8 and their families.

2. Master of Education in Literacy Online Program

The M.Ed. in Literacy develops the skills teachers need to boost student literacy. Literacy is critical for academic success. Teachers working with P-12 students need the knowledge and skills to support their students’ diverse needs.

Certified Washington educators can earn a P-12 reading endorsement on their teaching certificate. Graduates of this program can choose from a number of career roles, including reading specialist, title 1 specialist, district reading curriculum specialist or classroom teacher with enhanced skills in literacy instruction.

3. Master of Education in Curriculum & Instruction Online Program

Students who complete the M. Ed. in Curriculum & Instruction understand how to develop curriculum aligned with regulatory standards and evolving trends. They also learn to refine instructional strategies and prepare for roles such as instructional coach or curriculum personnel. Completing this program prepares students to serve as lead teachers in the classroom or outside the classroom in building-level positions that involve curriculum planning or instructional design.

4. Master of Education in Adult Education Online Program

The M.Ed. in Adult Education prepares educators for assessment and classroom management as they pertain to adult learners. Graduates of the program may work with adults in post-secondary educational settings such as community colleges, vocational programs, GED programs, adult basic skills programs, in-service coordination in corporate and non-profit settings, military training, and more.

5. Master of Education in Educational Leadership Online Program

EWU’s online M.Ed. in Educational Leadership program prepares candidates for school leadership positions such as department head, mentor, curriculum coach and more. Based on state and national standards, the program covers best practices in educational leadership, management and administration.

Note: This program does not satisfy the requirements of the Washington State Department of Public Instruction for a school principal certificate. Completing an M.Ed. in Educational Leadership with Principal Certification (below) enables candidates to earn that credential as well.

6. Master of Education in Educational Leadership, Principal Certification Online Program

Through the online M.Ed. in Educational Leadership, Principal Certification, educators gain the leadership knowledge and practical experience they need to assume the role of principal or a variety of other administrative positions in public schools. They are also prepared to earn principal certification.
